Iceland Highlands and Waterfalls Photography Workshop – About the Trip

Iceland is a place with incredible options for landscape photography. It’s just so diverse. We have been running photography workshops in the country for a number of years now and we find every time we go is a magical experience. Different times of year can dictate different itineraries. We plan our trips around these realities and this trip is no different.

We will be visiting the country at a very special time where we can still access the majestic centre of black desert and multi coloured mountains. The freeze of winter will still be at bay. It is nevertheless dark enough to shoot the northern lights.

You will be driven by 4 x 4  to hand picked locations throughout the Icelandic highlands at the optimum time of day to get the best from the locations. It’s three instructors to 9 participants so we run a great ratio in that respect.  We will shoot sunrise and sunset each day while having a constant eye on what the aurora is doing. The highlands are truly unspoiled nature. It’s an exceptional place for photography with the opportunity to photograph lava fields, jet black volcanic sands stretching for miles, mountains covered with bright green moss and colourful craters filled with water. The highland’s is covered in geothermal hotspots and previous volcanic activity is often evident, a tell tale sign of the gigantic forces at work.

We will also shoot some of the iconic south coast waterfalls as well as some littler known falls inland in the Highlands area. Its a unique Iceland trip with amazing shooting opportunities.

Optional Helicopter?

Please let us know if you would like to shoot from the sky as we will organise as helicopter ride for the group. We need numbers to establish expense.

So Where Will We Go?

Our tour leaves from Reykjavik international airport at 2.30 pm on Sept 7th 2018. We like to make things as easy as possible for everyone so we will be staying 1 night at our first location exploring the southern highlands and more well known locations such as Skogafoss. The trip then moves further inland and we will be based for a further 2 nights amongst the volcanic desert and lava fields of the northern highlands with a base near Landmannalaugar. Our final night is in Reykjavik beside the airport. From both highland bases we will be able to explore the out worldly landscape of Iceland’s interior.

With its colourful rhyolite mountains this area looks like a painting. Short hikes through stunning lava fields, and visits to steaming geothermal holes in the ground gives you fantastic photo opportunities.  A hike up the surrounding mountains provides you with a bird’s eye view of the area.

Walking and Fitness

A basic level of fitness will be required. The majority of locations at our Iceland Highlands Photo Tour will be reachable by 4 x 4 but there will be a few short hikes involved. Max 1 hour.

Why Choose ExploreLight?

Unlike most companies offering photography courses and workshops our instructors are specialist landscape and nature photographers. We represent the pinnacle of landscape photography training on an international level. Peter, who runs this tour is currently Irish Landscape Photographer of the Year.

Costs and What’s Included for Iceland Highlands Photo Tour

The cost of our 5 day Iceland Highlands Photography Workshop is €2900. A €500 deposit is required to secure your place and the balance would be due two months before the trip gets under way.

For this cost you will receive hotel accommodation throughout. Your comfort is taken seriously and we will be staying in hotels throughout with wi – fi access.

The only difference with this and other workshops is that there is essentially nowhere to eat at most of the locations we will shoot. Hence we will be bringing a trailer and portable bbq and picnicking most lunches and dinners by some stunning mountains and lakes. There may be times when we have to make do with a sambo for dinner but on our scouting mission a bbq was possible every night.
There will be the occasional eat out and option to get lunch in the garage but we cant predict how often this will occur as it will be dictated a little bit by weather. Hence we cannot factor this into our costings so your snacks or eat out will be at your own expense. We anticipate that 70 – 80% of your food will be covered within the list price.

Alcohol is not included.

Transportation is also included so you will be driven to and from all locations throughout the duration of the tour by 4 x 4. All you need to do is enjoy your shooting, learn some new skills and make lots of beautiful images.
